Wedding invitation - invitación de boda

I got married last year. My then fiancé took care of almost everything... But the invitation was all mine. After too much thinking and less sketching, I finally came up with the final illustration.

Me casé el año pasado. El que aún era mi prometido se encarcó de casi todo... Pero la invitación era toda mía. Tras mucho pensar y poco abocetar, llegué a la idea final.

The dragon represents him, for it's his Chinese horoscope and he feels quite identified with such a strong creature. I'm the tree. I suppose I kind of connect him to the ground with my roots, but I get distracted from time to time with all those little creatures and magic around me (or we could say I have my feet in the ground and my head in the clouds).

And, just for those around who are curious enough, Here are some pictures of the final printed card, on a really ivory thick paper (though it doesn't really show in the pictures).

El dragón le representa a él, ya que es su horóscopo chino y se siente identificado con esta criatura. Yo soy el árbol. Supongo que a veces soy la que mantengo sus pies en la tierra con mis raíces, pero me distraigo de vez en cuando con todas las criaturillas y magia a mi alrededor (o, dicho de otra forma, tengo los pies en la tierra y la cabeza en las nubes).

Y ya para los que tengan curiosidad, aquí os dejo algunas fotografías de como quedó la invitación final impresa, en un grueso papel de tono marfil (que no se aprecia demasiado en las imágenes...)

Sailormoon

I absolutely adored Sailormoon as a kid. I wanted to be Usagi Tsukino and have a secret identity and a beautiful love story. I collected cards, toys, comics, art books... For some time, I kind of copied Naoko Takeuchi's style.

So I think it was about time I made some fan art, my own way.

I may even overcome my fear of ruining the characters and actually make some more fan art, because it is fun.

This is done with liquid watercolours and ink (applied with an actual pen with its nibs and all! it's been too long since I last played with them)

Adoraba Sailormoon cuando era una niña. Quería ser Usagi Tsukino y tener una identidad secreta y una bonita historia de amor. Coleccionaba cartas, juguetes, comics, libros de ilustraciones... E incluso, durante un tiempo, imitaba el estilo de Naoko Takeuchi al dibujar.

Así que... Creo que ya iba siendo hora de que hiciese algo de fan art, a mi manera.

Puede que hasta supere mi miedo de cargarme los personajes y haga más fan art, porque es divertido.

Hecho con acuarela líquida y tinta (¡con plumilla, de esa que se moja en la tinta! Hacía demasiado tiempo que no trasteaba con ella)

Here are the finals for day 3 and 5 of the challenge. I've skipped #4 for now, but I have some plans for it!

Day 3:
Tattoo illustration with retrofuturistic theme. The only condition: white background.

Day 5:
Portrait & handlettering. I had to pick a celebrity I admire and a quote from this person I feel identified with, draw his/her portrait and write the quote by hand, creating a pleasant composition.

Aquí están los finales para los días 3 y 5 del reto. Por ahora me he saltado el 4, pero tengo planes para él :)

Día 3:
Ilustración para tatuje de tema retrofuturista. Única condición: que tenga el fondo blanco.

Día 5:
Retrato y handlettering. Tenía que elegir un personaje que admire y una cita suya con la que me sintiese identificada, dibujar su retrato y escribir la cita, formando una composición agradable.

The story behind this...I was listening to Space Oddity by David Bowie, and taking into account the way he used to dress in the 70's and the theme, I thought it was necessary to turn Bowie into my alien. Maybe not the usual idea for a tattoo, but I absolutely enjoyed making this illustration. Below, some sketches... as you can see I had a totally different idea at first, but I just couldn't ignore that sketch!

La historia tras esta ilustración es curiosa... estaba escuchando Space Oddity de David Bowie y, teniendo en cuenta la pinta que llevaba en los 70 y la temática, no pude evitar pensar que era totalmente necesario hacer de él mi alienígena. Quizás no es una idea para tatuaje muy típica, pero disfruté muchísimo haciendo la ilustración. Debajo dejo algunos bocetos, en los que se puede apreciar que, en un principio, mi idea iba por otros derroteros, ¡pero es que no podía ignorar ese boceto!

I made a list of different quotes I liked from different celebrities, but in the end I picked Terry Pratchett because I wanted to pay a little homage to him. I truly enjoy his books and felt very sad when he passed away.

En este caso hice una lista de citas que me gustaban de varios personajes. Finalmente elegí a Terry Pratchett porque quería rendirle un pequeño homenaje... Disfruto muchísimo de sus libros, y me puse muy triste cuando falleció.

La cita en castellano dice así:

"El problema de tener una mente abierta, por supuesto, es que la gente insistirá en venir e intentar poner cosas dentro"

Portrait - Elena

I envisioned this portrait over a year ago. I even made some sketches, looked for reference pictures, thought about the way she is. And then I got scared it wouldn't turn out as I had imagined, so I didn't make it.

But this year, with a brand new attitude, I dared to try. And it was sooo much worth it! It is very exciting to put a bit of yourself into something and turn it into a birthday present, especially if it is for someone as emotional and grateful as Elena is.

(Sorry about the image quality, since it's an uneven lighted picture with lots of Photoshop.)

Pensé en hacer este retrato hace más de un año. Incluso hice bocetos, busqué fotografías de referencia, medité acerca de cómo es ella. Y me dio miedo que no me saliese como había imaginado, así que no lo hice.

Pero este año, con otra actitud, me atreví. Y la verdad es que mereció mucho la pena. Es muy emocionante poner un trocito de ti en algo y hacer de ello un regalo de cumpleaños, especialmente si la destinataria es tan emotiva y agradecida como la retratada en este caso.

(Pido disculpas por la calidad de la imagen, ya que es una fotografía que no está muy bien iluminada, con un montón de Photoshop para mejorarla.)

This time the subject was to illustrate a haiku. I started drawing small thumbnails, and found it hard until I started thinking about more personal interpretations. The final drawing is a bit about experimenting with ink.

Esta vez se trataba de ilustrar un haiku. Comencé haciendo bocetos chiquititos, y me resultó difícil hasta que empecé a interpretar el texto de forma más personal. En el dibujo final he aprovechado también para experimentar un poco con tinta.

#retoid - día 1

A bit late, but I've been able to start the challenge by Ilustrando Dudas, in which they propose a subject per day for a whole month (july 15th - august 15th). It is a challenge for both my constancy and my imagination.
I'm late because I was finishing an illustration (that I'll share once I've handed it to their owners!) and because of life (and work) stuff. My intention is to make a little something of every subject at my own pace, even if I can't make a finished illustration due to lack of time. The most important thing about the challenge is to draw!

The fist subject was: 

Character design - a cheerful, good and super shy explorer boy or girl who wants to go around the world and see the archaeological remains of the great civilizations of history.

 I'll leave you with the first sketches and the final design: Clara, a girl who admires Indiana Jones and Howard Carter and draws and takes notes of everything she finds. Quite a mini archaeologist!

Con retraso, pero he podido comenzar con este reto de Ilustrando Dudas en el que proponen un tema diario durante un mes (15 de julio - 15 de agosto). Es tanto un reto para mi constancia como para mi imaginación.
Me he retrasado porque estaba acabando una ilustración (que mostraré cuando la tengan sus dueños) y por cosas de la vida (y del trabajo). Mi intención es, aunque sea a mi ritmo, intentar hacer todos los temas, si bien de esta forma puede que no los desarrolle a fondo por falta de tiempo. ¡Lo importante es dibujar!

El primer tema era:

Diseño de personaje - Niña o niño explorador súper tímido, risueño y bonachón, cuyo sueño es recorrer el mundo de mayor y conocer los restos de las grandes civilizaciones de la historia. 

Os dejo con los primeros bocetos y el diseño final: Clara, una niña fan de Indiana Jones y Howard Carter que dibuja y toma nota de todo lo que encuentra para tenerlo documentado. Una miniarqueóloga en toda regla.

All-In-One!

I'm currently looking for a good all-in-one or a good scanner + printer combination. Brother machines seem to be quite good, my friend Carmen Carnero (who is an excellent artist, please visit her blog!) has an A3 all-in-one from this brand and is very happy with it. But it would be nice to hear about other people's experiences and recommendations.

I must admit that an A3 scanner really draws my attention because it can make scanning formats over A4 much easier... but it's not something strictly necessary. I have years of experience with puzzles!


So... any comments?

Estoy buscando una buena multifunción o una combinación de escáner e impresora. La marca Brother me llama la atención, incluso mi amiga Carmen Carnero (que es una gran artista, ¡visitad su blog, por favor!) tiene una multifunción A3 de esta marca y está muy contenta con ella. Pero sería interesante escuchar las experiencias y consejos de más gente.

He de admitir que un escaner A3 me llama mucho, puede hacer la tarea de escanear papeles más grandes que un A4 mucho más fácil.... pero no es algo totalmente necesario. ¡Tengo años de experiencia montando puzzles!
